Based on the principle that learning a trade also involves practising construction, the students were encouraged to ‘skilfully tinker’ with instant built objects. They spent a week in the Vaud Jura designing and building two huts as a team in a barn that had been converted into a ceramists' workshop. Each hut is designed to accommodate one or two people so that they can sleep, read and work. They are micro-dwelling units. The students had a workshop, tools and a van at their disposal and went to one of the region's famous DIY shops, HORNBACH, with a tight budget that they had to manage precisely. Using the materials they bought, they devised details and put them into practice straight away. Thanks to their knowledge of tools, materials and how to assemble them, they will be able to build the two cabins and, at the same time, keep a logbook of their experience by drawing up instructions for use. The new do-it-yourselfers had to demonstrate greater collective organisation and good management of time and resources.
